Eligibility

ELIGIBILITY FOR GRADUATION AND PARTICIPATION

Eligibility for Graduation From Secondary Schools In VA

  • A student shall be eligible to graduate from the accredited secondary school last attended during the regular school term upon successful completion of the graduation requirements set forth in the Standards for Accrediting Secondary Schools in Virginia.

  • Students completing graduation requirements in an accredited summer school shall be eligible to graduate from the school previously attended during the regular school term when the summer school credits are earned in compliance with summer school regulations set forth in the Standards for Accrediting Secondary Schools of Virginia.

  • In order to graduate from an accredited secondary school and receive a high school diploma in Virginia, students shall earn the number of needed credits prescribed by the Board of Education as set forth in the Standards for Accrediting Secondary Schools of Virginia and based on the guidelines set forth by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

ELIGIBILITY FOR GRADUATION

To receive a diploma a student must:

  • complete elective courses leading to further education or preparation for employment; and

  • earn the minimum units of credit and meet any other testing requirements set forth in the Standards of Quality and the Standards of Accreditation.

  • Beginning with their ninth-grade class, students receiving a standard or advanced studies diploma shall have earned the required number of standard and verified credits as set forth in the Standards of Accreditation.

 

RANKING

RANKING STUDENTS FOR GRADUATION

Board of Education Regulations require that courses taken below the ninth grade level which are identified as 9th or above, plus all other courses classified as 9th-12th grades be included in determination of the final GPA. All Enrolled students are ranked at the end of the first semester of the senior year. ONLY students completing all requirements at the end of the spring semester are eligible for the academic honor of valedictorian or salutatorian. Students who complete graduation requirements in summer school will retain their previously determined class rank.
