Central High School Dual Enrollment Options


Dual enrollment courses are college level courses that offer high school and college credit for the same course. Dual enrollment courses are offered at Central High School through M.E.C.C., on the M.E.C.C. campus, online through M.E.C.C., and at UVA-Wise.

The courses can be taken granted that the pre-requisites are met which are set by each individual college and with high school approval. To qualify as a dual enrollment course, the course must be at least 3 college credit hours and typically in a core area and/or in a college transferable program. Courses that are not transferable must be approved individually.

Please speak to Mrs. Salyers for approval on dual enrollment courses which are taken directly at the college. Typically, dual enrollment courses in the core areas are recommended for juniors and seniors that are college bound with a G.P.A of 3.0 or better and with satisfactory attendance.

The high school administration and Matt Hurt, the Director of Curriculum & Instruction for Wise County Public Schools, must approve every dual enrollment course requested for each student individually, each and every semester, and reserve the right not to approve a request if the student is not in good standing or if the same dual enrollment course is currently offered on our high school campus.

I. M.E.C.C. Dual Enrollment on Central High School Campus

(including Linwood Holton Governor’s School and SVETN Elite Learning Online courses):

1. Students must have submitted a complete application to M.E.C.C. including the in-state tuition form with all applicable parent/student signatures. For A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School courses or SVETN Elite Learning courses, students will also be required to fill out an additional application that includes teacher recommendation signatures prior to placement testing.

2. Students must take the M.E.C.C. placement test and must have passing scores on the college level according to the pre-requisites for each individual dual enrollment course that they plan to take. The tests include reading, writing skills, math, and the writing sample (writing sample is only available to rising seniors planning to take ENG111). The specific course pre-requisites are listed in the college catalog online.

3. Students will be registered by Mrs. Salyers in the guidance department if they requested the course during pre-registration when schedules are made and if they pass the necessary placement tests.

4. Students will pay their 20% of the tuition cost per credit hour. This 20% cost for 2011-12 is $73.20 per 3 credit hour course although it does increase slightly each year. The cost of a 4 credit hour course is $97.60. This tuition is paid directly to Central High School in the form of cash, check, or money order to Mrs. Mills, the school book keeper in the main office within the first three weeks of school for each semester. Wise County Public Schools will pay the remaining 80% of the tuition.

There are several free courses offered at Central High School including A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School courses that are taught online (but live lecture). Students must take these courses in the Governor’s school lab in the Library but they are totally tuition free including books/supplies.

A complete list is available in the guidance department or online at www.hgs.k12.va.us including course offerings and schedules. The same is true for the SVETN Elite learning courses in that they must be taken here in our school Library and they are tuition free including books. The SVETN Elite learning courses are completely online which may fit at anytime in the student’s schedule. A list of these courses along with additional information is available online at www.svetn.org/eliteAditional . Additional free courses are offered through the Math & Science Initiative Grant and include Pre-Calculus I & II, Calculus I, and Biology 101 & 102 on our campus with credited awarded through M.E.C.C. Other courses are also free under this grant but are only offered on the college campuses.

5. Books will always be provided if courses are taken on our campus but not when taken at the college or directly through the college online.

II. M.E.C.C. Dual Enrollment on M.E.C.C. Campus

(including their distance learning or online courses):

1. Students must have submitted a complete application to M.E.C.C. including the in-state tuition form with all applicable parent/student signatures.

2. Students must take the M.E.C.C. placement test and must have passing scores on the college level according to pre-requisites for each dual enrollment course that they plan to take. The tests include reading, writing skills, math, and the writing sample (writing sample only available to rising seniors planning to take ENG111). The specific course pre-requisites are listed in the college catalog online.

3. Students must notify Mrs. Salyers as to which courses they plan to take at M.E.C.C. including distance learning (online) courses and which semester they plan to take them in and must then obtain a Principal/School Designee Permission Form from Mrs. Salyers that has to be signed and approved for dual enrollment credit and the tuition agreement. This form must then be turned in to the Enrollment Services office in Godwin Hall on M.E.C.C.’s campus. Students must ensure that they get enrolled in courses before those courses fill and close. Their schedule is available online at www.me.vccs.edu (under class schedules).

4. Students are responsible for purchasing their own books/workbooks/supplies through the college bookstore or through other booksellers for dual enrollment courses taken outside of Central High School. They must also set up their online account through the Blackboard Student Information System including college e-mail accounts. This is very important because this is how they will access their assignments for some classes and to access grades at the end of the semester which must be submitted to Mrs. Salyers for transcripts.

5. Students are also required to visit Robb Hall to obtain their college picture identification card which will be required for all testing in distance learning/online courses in the testing center as well as to gain access to computer labs and additional services on the college campus. Students that truly do not have a car/transportation may request that our Librarian be their test proctor for the course. The student is responsible for setting this up with Susan Kennedy at M.E.C.C. at the beginning of the course. This must be limited to underclassmen and students that do not truly have transportation to M.E.C.C. due to the time constraints on our librarian. Students also must be sure to attend the orientation at MECC for any online or distance learning courses. This information is in the college schedule found online. This is very important.

6. Students will pay their 20% of the tuition cost per credit hour. This 20% cost for is about $75 per 3 credit hour course although it does increase slightly each year. The cost of a 4 credit hour course is about $98. This tuition is paid directly to Central High School in the form of cash, check, or money order to Mrs. Mills, the school book keeper in the main office within the first three weeks of school for each semester. Wise County Public Schools will pay the remaining 80% of the tuition. Please note some courses such as SPA101 are 4 credit hour courses are tuition is calculated by credit hour.

7. At the end of the semester, students are responsible for reporting their final semester grades to Mrs. Salyers by official transcript or online unofficial transcript from the S.I.S. or by requesting an official transcript be mailed to Mrs. Salyers in guidance at the immediate completion of the course. If grades are not reported, an F will be entered for final semester transcript grades. This is very important because without correct grades, the final rank and transcript recalculation process may be delayed or inaccurate.

III. Dual Enrollment on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise Campus:

(Please note that courses may not be taken if the same course is offered on our campus for dual enrollment)

1. Students must complete the University of Virginia’s College at Wise application and in-state tuition form with all student and parent signatures. Applications can be obtained from Mrs. Salyers in the guidance department. Completed applications and a signed parent permission letter (stating that the student has permission to take dual enrollment courses on the UVA-Wise campus) must be returned to Mrs. Salyers in guidance (typically no application fee applies for dual enrollment students due to number of credit hours being taken).

2. Once applications and parent permission letters are returned to Mrs. Salyers then a school permission letter signed by Mrs. Salyers as the principal’s designee will be included as well as an official high school transcript and S.A.T. college entrance scores. The guidance office will mail the completed packet to the college admissions office.

3. If a student has not taken the S.A.T., they should register to take it on a spring test date to allow for scores to arrive at the college in time for scheduling. Students may register by mail or online at www.collegeboard.com for the SAT I -Reasoning Test. The last SAT test date is in early June of each year (regular registration deadlines are in early May and late fee deadlines are usually in mid-May or you may test as a standby). Please submit the UVA-Wise college code on this registration form, so that the test scores will be sent directly to the admissions office when available. The Central High School College Board code is 472-445. See Mrs. Salyers for registration materials and details. Students should also carefully read the S.A.T. test day reminders such as bringing their test admission ticket, picture identification or driver’s license, calculator, and pencils. Fee waivers are available to students that receive free/reduced lunch for ACT/SAT testing by request but are limited to two waivers per student per school year.

4. Students taking Calculus I at the UVA-Wise, must request an official transcript be mailed from M.E.C.C. to UVA-Wise, to prove completion of the college level pre-requisite Pre-Calculus I and II. There is a transcript request form that can be obtained in Guidance or on the M.E.C.C. website that can be mailed, faxed, or delivered to the college. This should be done in May, once final college grades are in at the end of the spring semester to allow for the final Pre-Calculus II grades to be posted to the transcript.

5. Once all of these items have been received in the college’s admissions office, a post card will be mailed to the student’s home to notify the student of receipt of the materials or to notify them of items that they may lack for completion of the admissions process. After all items are received, the student is required to contact Rusty Necessary, the Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management, at 328-0102 for an appointment to register for courses, review schedule options, and review any pre-requisites or placement test requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to contact him for an appointment for registration. Students must meet with him to ensure that they are scheduled appropriately and are not billed for tuition or books on Math & Science Initiative courses. Students should decide which courses they wish to take for dual enrollment before meeting with Mr. Necessary and a schedule is available online at www.uvawise.edu . For questions concerning dual enrollment courses that meet high school graduation requirements, please speak to Mrs. Salyers.

6. Tuition is paid directly to UVA-Wise when tuition applies and there is no dual enrollment tuition rate agreement or financial aid available to high school students. Students must also buy their own books/workbooks at the campus bookstore at their own expense. The only courses that can be taken tuition free are under the Math and Science Initiative include: Pre-Calculus I (MTH111), Pre-Calculus II (MTH112), Calculus I (Math204), Calculus II (Math205), Calculus III (Math306), College Physics (Phys311-calculus based)/Lab, and Fundamentals of Computer Programming (Cosc181). Under this initiative, the required labs and books for these specific courses are also free. Students are required to also take any associated lab course but separate dual enrollment credits are not issued for labs since they are only one credit hour courses.

7. Once students register for their college classes with Mr. Necessary and obtain their books, they must notify Mrs. Salyers of the specific course and time that they are registered for to ensure that they get the appropriate dual enrollment course credit on the high school transcript.

The transferability of dual enrollment courses are subject to the discretion of the receiving college/university. Please review the receiving college’s Transfer Guide and/or transfer policy to note any requirements that they may have including a minimum grade received in the course, if it is a general education requirement, or if they have a course equivalent. Some institutions have a transfer specialist to assist students and parents with these transfer questions but it also may depend upon the planned major. Some larger universities also require that complete transcripts are submitted to the Dean of the individual college or Core Area (the specific department) for approval on each course transfer. Most colleges and universities have a link to their transfer guide on their webpage as well as a deadline for submission of transfer transcripts and requests. If you
delay in this process, for get to send your transcripts, or miss a required deadline, they may refuse to transfer the course.
