Administrative Support Technology

Established in 1996 by business faculty to assist AST majors. Selection of students is based on financial need/academic potential.

AIMS Higher Scholarship*

Established in 2005 through a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission to assist high school graduates who have met the academic, attendance, and community service requirements for the AIMS Higher Scholarship.

Alpha Natural Resources, LLC Scholarship

Established in 2005. Priority given to dependents of employees of any Alpha subsidiary. Awards of $250, $500, $750, or $1,000, based on number of credit hours attempted. If funds remain after dependents of Alpha Natural Resources employees are served, scholarship may be awarded to other students.

Armsey, Joyce

Memorial scholarship established in 1988 to benefit nursing students with financial need and educational promise.

Association of Classified Employees

Established in 1995 to benefit students from MECC's service region. Minimum of 2.0 GPA, and students who receive sufficient financial aid for 50% or more of tuition are not eligible.

Bell, Richard Tavenor

Memorial scholarship established in 1999 to assist MECC students with academic promise and/or financial need.

Buccaneer Scholarship

Established in 2003 by the Buccaneer Scholarship Committee to assist Powell Valley High School graduates with financial need and academic promise. The Buccaneer Scholarship Committee collaborates with the MECC Foundation staff in selecting recipients. Scholarship is renewable for a second year if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is being made. Student must submit references.

Chadwell, R. V.

Memorial scholarship created in memory of a former Sheriff of Lee County.

Cantrell, Orby

Memorial scholarship established in 1983 by friends and family of The Honorable Orby Cantrell, who served in the House of Delegates for 30 years, to benefit Scott, Lee, Wise County students.

Cawood Family Scholarship

Established in 1999 to benefit BSG resident; older, returning student; grade point average of 2.5 or above.

Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship VA Foundation for CC Education

Established by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education to assist at least one MECC student leader.

Clements, William & Ruth

Memorial scholarship established in 2005 to assist students with financial need and to remember two advocates for education in Norton, Wise County and the region.

Coeburn Civic League

Established in 1999 to assist incoming high school graduates from Coeburn (first priority), or Norton (second priority).

Daniels, Charles L. Hall of Honor

Memorial scholarship established in 2002 to provide unrestricted financial assistance to students. Administratively restricted to support students devoting at least 900 hours a year to organized service learning activities (AmeriCorps) while attending MECC.

Edmonds, Campbell S.

Memorial scholarship established by the MECC Foundation board to honor the late Slemp Foundation Board member, Campbell S. Edmonds. Unrestricted scholarship awards may be made to students from Lee, Counties, or City of Norton. May be administratively restricted to support eligible recipients devoting at least 900 hours a year to service learning through AmeriCorps.

Edmonds, W. Campbell & Mary Virginia

Memorial scholarship established by the Slemp Foundation to assist students from Lee and Wise Counties, or the City of Norton. May be administratively restricted to support eligible recipients devoting at least 900 hours a year to service learning through AmeriCorps.

Ervinton High School

Established in 1995 to benefit graduates of Ervinton High School. May be administratively restricted to support eligible recipients devoting at least 900 hours a year to service learning through AmeriCorps.

Faith Cox Buccaneer Endowed

Established in 2006 by the Slemp Foundation to assist Powell Valley High School graduates that have financial need and academic progress. Recipients are selected by the Buccaneer Scholarship Committee, which collaborates with the MECC Foundation staff in administering the fund. Scholarship awards renewable for a second year if funds are available and satisfactory academic progress is being made.

Farmers & Miners Annual Scholarship

Established in 2006 to benefit one new student annually from either Lee, Scott, Wise or Dickenson Counties. Selection process requires alternating the selection process by county. The recipient must have financial need. Students making satisfactory academic promise can receive renewals in the second year.

Ficker, Dr. Victor B.

Established in 1988 to benefit Dickenson or Scott County students.

Frazier, Billy W.

Memorial scholarship established in 1991 to benefit Scott County students majoring in business, political science or related majors. Recipients must have financial need and academic promise.

Garrett, Lena Joyce Huff

Memorial scholarship established in 2009 to benefit nursing students from St. Charles, Virginia. Recipients must have financial need and at least a 2.0 GPA.

General Scholarship

Awards are funded by MECC Foundation special events and unrestricted scholarship gifts. Scholarships can assist students with financial need or academic promise.

Gibson-Ireco

Established in 1982 to assist entering high school graduates from Scott County.

Gilley Family Scholarship

Established in 2003 to assist students based on financial need and/or academic potential. No restrictions were set by the donor. Administratively restricted to benefit AIMS Higher Scholarship recipients and meet AIMS Higher matching requirements.

Glenmary Council Knights of Columbus #7853

Established in 2007 to assist full-time students that are residents of Wise, Lee, Scott, Russell, Dickenson Counties or the City of Norton. Selections will be based on financial need and academic potential.

Goodloe Brothers Educational Endowment

Established in 1997 in memory of Big Stone Gap early settlers John Mills, Edward Everett, and William Tavenor. Recipients to be selected with consideration for GPA, on and off-campus civic involvement, and leadership potential.

Grady, Larry Memorial

Memorial scholarship established in 1999 to assist students who are single parents, as well as liberal arts majors.

Holston Medical Group Clinical

Established in 2003 to assist students with financial need/academic potential.

Holton, Governor A. Linwood Hall of Honor

Scholarship established in 2001 to provide unrestricted financial assistance to students. Administratively restricted to support students devoting at least 900 hours a year to organized service learning activities (AmeriCorps) while attending MECC.

Established in 2000 to provide unrestricted financial assistance to students. Administratively restricted to support students devoting at least 900 hours a year to organized service learning activities (AmeriCorps) while attending MECC.

Memorial scholarship established in 2001 to assist students from Scott County with financial need.

 

Kanto, William P. Sr.

Memorial scholarship established in 1995 in remembrance of an outstanding local and Virginia Community College System board member. Awarded to students from Lee, Scott, Wise Co. or the City of Norton who have financial need and/or academic promise.

Kelly, Chant Branham Memorial

Memorial scholarship established in 2002 in remembrance of an outstanding Central leader. Awarded to assist residents of Wise County who have financial need and academic promise.

Kiwanis Club of Norton

Established in 2001 to assist J. I. Burton High School graduates (first priority), City of Norton residents (second priority), or Wise County resident (third priority). Assist students with financial need and academic promise.

Kline Foundation

Scholarship support has provided scholarship assistance to students who are residents of Wise, Lee, Dickenson, & Buchanan Counties and the City of Norton since 1983. Awards are based on financial need and academic promise.

Lee County Bar Association

Established in 1995 to assist Lee county students with financial need and academic promise.

Lions Club of Big Stone Gap

Established in 1994 to assist Powell Valley High School graduate. Awarded based on academic progress and financial need.

Lions Club of Duffield

Established in 1996 to assist a Rye Cove High School graduate. Priority will be given to students with physical disabilities and the donor will be involved in the selection process of the scholarship recipient.

Lions Club of Norton

Established in 1999 to assist graduates of J. I. Burton High School (first priority) or Wise County students (second priority). Student should have financial need and academic promise.

Litton, Frank Sr. Memorial

Memorial scholarship established in 2000 to assist Lee County students. Student should have financial need and academic promise.

Martin, John Memorial

Memorial scholarship established in 1989 by Lambda Alpha Epsilon Criminal Justice Club in remembrance of a Lee County deputy who died in the line of duty. Recipients must be from Lee County, majoring in criminal justice, and have financial need and academic promise.

Established in 1994 to assist honors students that also exhibit leadership qualities.

McNiel, Lucy W.

Established in 1992 to assist Lee County students who have financial need and academic promise.

Memorial scholarship established in 1991 to assist students with a GPA of at least 2.5; minority students are encouraged to apply.

Memorial scholarship established in 1985 to benefit Wise or Lee County, also Letcher County, Kentucky students with at least a 3.0 GPA and intention to stay in the area

Nalco Foundation

Established in 1985 to assist students with financial need and academic promise.

Norton Community Hospital Auxiliary

Established in 1995 to assist nursing students. Awards based on financial need and academic promise.

Orr, Lucile M. Medical Technology

Established in 1995 to assist a Lee County student majoring in a health care career, with preference for medical lab technology. Scholarship is non-
renewable and recipients should have the intention of working in Lee County. Students should have financial need and academic promise.

Orr, Lucile M. Health Care

Established in 1995 to assist a Lee County student majoring in a health care career with the intention of working in Lee County. Scholarship is nonrenewable. Students should have financial need and academic promise.

Paramont Coal

Established in 1983 to assist dependents of Paramont Mining Corporation enrolled full-time, and that demonstrate need for scholarship funds.

Pepsi-Hunnicutt

Established in 1999 to assist students with financial need and academic promise.

MECC Presidential Honor Scholarship

MECC Presidential Honor Scholarship is an award given to students who not only thrive in the classroom but outside as well through volunteer and community involvement. Recipients of the Presidential Honor Scholarship - MECC are typically committed and hard-working students. Considering these factors, the Presidential Honor Scholarship - MECC application process is competitive and the title prestigious.

 

Recipients of the Presidential Honor Scholarship - MECC can use the scholarship at either public or private institutions, depending on the actual stipulations. Whether the Presidential Honor Scholarship - MECC is used for purposes of paying tuition or room and board is entirely up to the recipient. Because of this flexibility, the student determines where the funds would be best utilized from the Presidential Honor Scholarship MECC.

 

In order to be considered for the Presidential Honor Scholarship - MECC, students must fill out an application. Also, students applying for the Presidential Honor Scholarship - MECC may be required to write an essay, interview, or provide letters of recommendation. By enforcing such a rigorous process, the qualifications of the Presidential Honor Scholarship - MECC recipient are superb.

Quesenberry, Milford Spencer and Agnes Balcerski

Scholarship established in 1992 to assist students enrolled in an Associate Degree program with a 3.0 GPA and with financial need.

Rasnick, H. C.

Established in 1993 to assist students in a pre-chiropractic curriculum with a 2.75 GPA. Recipients must plan to attend Palmer Chiropractic
College and pledge to return to Virginia for a career as Doctor of Chiropractic. Repayment of scholarship is expected for those who do not fulfill the expectations for continuing education and employment in Virginia.

Rhea Rasnic

Memorial scholarship established in 1997 to assist Lee County students who are education majors (first priority), have financial need (second priority), or that are majoring in any other field if there is no education major eligible (third priority).

Reasor, Connie D.

Memorial scholarship established in 1996 in remembrance of a Lee County special education teacher. Scholarship assists Lee County residents who are or GED recipients or graduates of a Lee County public school. Recipients must be verified as special needs students or have plans to teach special education.

Reid, John A.

Established in 1996 by the Slemp Foundation in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of MECC. Assists students from Wise or Lee Counties or the City of Norton with financial need and academic promise. Scholarship may be administratively restricted to support students devoting at least 900 hours a year to organized service learning activities (AmeriCorps) while attending MECC.

Rhoton, E. J. & Nell B.

Established in 1992 to assist a graduate of Rye Cove or Gate City High Schools majoring in education.

Robinson, Elna J. & Gray

Memorial scholarship established in 1993 to benefit a Central High School graduates. One recipient is selected by the public school system; others are selected by MECC's Financial Aid Office.

Rosenbalm, Kyle P. - Memorial

Memorial scholarship established in 2006 for a former Lee County School Superintendent. Recipient selected by MECC Financial Aid Office and scholarship awarded to a Thomas Walker High School graduate at the awards ceremony. Not to be based on financial need or academic standing.

 

Rotary Club of Scott County

Established in 1996 to assist a student from Scott County. Selections based on financial need and academic promise (at least a 3.0 GPA).

Sapra, Mr. & Mrs. P. C.

Memorial scholarship established in 1996 to assist students in a college transfer major.

Settle, Richard L. Jr. Hall of Honor

Scholarship created in 2003 to honor a former board member and retiree of Verizon who had been very active in economic development in the MECC service region.

Siphers, Henry Arthur & Edna Stewart

Memorial scholarship established in 1985 to benefit students with financial need and academic promise. Powell Valley High or Appalachia High School graduates are eligible for the awards.

Skorupa, Thomas H.

Memorial scholarship established in 2002 to benefit students from the MECC service region; can support service learning recipient. Recipients to be selected based on financial need and academic promise.

Slemp, Patton W. & Dorothy D.

Memorial scholarship established in 1998 to benefit students with financial need and/or academic promise.

Square and Compasses Masonic

Established in 1999 by the Big Stone Gap Masonic Lodge #208 to assist a Powell Valley High School graduate. Recipient must have a 2.0 GPA and may be eligible for a second year renewal, dependent on maintaining satisfactory academic promise. Scholarship announced at Powell Valley High School awards ceremony. Student must submit references.

Stafford Communications

To assist a business, communications, or advertising major with a 2.5 GPA. Recipient should have financial need and be a resident of Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Russell or Bland Counties, or the City of Norton.

Stallings, Alice

Established in 1983 in the name of one of MECC's first nursing faculty members to assist second year nursing students with financial need and academic promise. Recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Stanley, Edward & Mary

Memorial scholarship established in 2002 to assist MECC students with financial need and academic promise. Scholarship administratively restricted to support students devoting at least 900 hours a year to organized service learning activities (AmeriCorps) while attending MECC.

Stickleyville Community-In- Action

Established in 2007 to assist a recipient from the community of Stickleyville. Recipient should be an entering high school graduate or a very recent graduate. Student should have some financial need and have academic promise (3.0 GPA).

Sutherland, Dr. George F.

Established in 1997 to assist a student in nursing or respiratory therapy with financial need and academic promise.

Virginia Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission

Established in 2000 through a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. Prefer that scholarship awards be made to tobacco families or to AIMS Higher scholarship recipients.

Thomas

Established in 1999 to assist a student with financial need and academic promise from Lee, Wise or Scott Counties or the City of Norton. Must maintain a 2.0 GPA.

Turnage, Martha A.

Established in 1996 to assist widowed women who are over 40 years of age and need to improve skills in order to get a job.

Vicars, Louise and Siebert

Established in 2008 to assist a Scott County student majoring in nursing.
Recipient to be selected based on financial need and academic promise.

Virginia Mining Association Scholarship Honoring Dink Shackleford

Memorial Scholarship created in 2007 to honor an outstanding Executive Director. Recipients should have financial need and academic promise and major in environmental science, mining, or manufacturing.

Wallens Ridge State Prison Employees Fund

Established in 2005, with priority given to a dependent of current Wallens Ridge State Prison (WRSP) employee. Recipient must have financial need and a 2.5 GPA. If no there is no applicant that is a WRSP dependent, another qualified MECC student will be selected.

Wax, Don

Established in 2007, with priority given to a Wise County student majoring in business with a GPA of 3.2 or above. Administratively restricted to assist Buccaneer Scholarship recipients who are entering students from Powell Valley High School.

Wellmont Lonesome Pine Community Outreach Pre-nursing

Established in 2007 to assist students who plan to major in nursing, but have yet to be accepted into the nursing program. Students should have financial need and academic promise. Priority should be given to students from Wise County.

Memorial scholarship established in 2004 to assist students with financial need academic potential.

Memorial scholarship established in 1999 to assist a Wise or Lee Co. student majoring in education and has received little financial assistance from other sources.

Memorial scholarship created in 2003. Administratively restricted to meeting matching requirements for AIMS Higher scholarship.

Wise ARH Auxiliary Medical

Scholarship established in 1998 to assist students in a health science curriculum. Scholarship may be administratively restricted to support students devoting at least 900 hours a year to organized service learning activities (AmeriCorps)
